Welcome to “The City of Brotherly Love,” Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaLocated on the Delaware River in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia played an important role in the birth of the United States and has remained one of the most influential American cities throughout our history. During the American Revolution, Philadelphia was the primary meeting place for our Founding Fathers. It was here that they signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and the Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Philadelphia also served as one of the nation’s many capitals during the Revolutionary War, and served as the temporary national capital from 1790 to 1800 while Washington, D.C. was under construction.

Philadelphia was founded by William Penn in October 1682, who planned a city along the Delaware River to serve as a port and center of government. The city grew rapidly, and by 1754 Philadelphia was both the largest city and the busiest port in the original thirteen colonies. From its very beginning the city’s vibrant growth attracted many influential thinkers including a young Benjamin Franklin.

Today, Philadelphia is one of the most important financial, medical and educational centers in America. Philadelphia’s rich and diverse history has made it a favorite of tourists with the Liberty Bell receiving over 2 million visitors per year. Known for its arts and culture, the city has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city, and Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped urban park in the world.
